What is an Antepost bet?

What is an Antepost bet?

This text is based on our personal experiences and represents our opinions.
Fortunately, with the advent of online bookmaking, having a punt on a sporting event is really made very easy. Just a visit to your preferred online bookmaker will show you that you can explore many markets for sporting events, from the following weekend’s Premier League matches, to a major international tournament which is not happening for another year or two. You may have heard the term Antepost betting crop up in your skirmishes with online betting, but what does it mean. This is actually a term which has most of its history in horse racing betting. As horse racing betting was one of the most prominent sports to have a flutter on, it really set the standard for a lot of sports betting. This is where you will most likely have heard the term ante post betting. When you make a bet well ahead of the start of a sporting event, then you are making an Antepost bet. For example, if you go to the horse racing section of your online bookmaker, then you will probably see an Antepost betting section there, and in there will be racing cards for the following day, and perhaps big races on the calendar such as the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National. These ante post prices pretty much appear as soon as the current races have ended!

What are the advantages of placing an Antepost bet? While there is some uncertainty taking an Antepost bet too early, it will give you an edge in picking up better odds. For example, say you want to get an early bet down on big international football match which is happening in a couple of months. You put a big stake on a price of 2/1 on your team, but injuries occur to key players over the next couple of weeks in their domestic matches, and suddenly your bet does not look a strong any more. The odds may even drift out a little bit from the early price which you took. That is just an example, because things can be looked at more positively the other way around. If you want an ante post on the next World Cup for example, and back your country (who had a poor last World Cup) now, in a few years a lot could have changed for the better. Therefore the odds may be a lot less come the eve of the tournament itself, but your chances of winning may have increased. Once a competition starts, say the FA Cup, or the World Cup, odds on the participating teams will get shorter as teams get knocked out. There is a lot of value to take in looking at Antepost bets. You cannot allow for all of the variables in-between really, but more often than not, it is a chance worth taking for your profit margins.

So, if you see a good tip for an Antepost bet, then really take a long hard look at it. You can pretty much guarantee the odds will be better than when the event starts, and the further in advance you take an Antepost bet, the bigger the difference is likely to be. One great example of this, is taking ante post bets on horse racing. The prices shift and change so much, almost constantly in the frantic minutes before a race, that you really can be well served by getting in early. Remember, things can go the other way of course, you may take an ante post bet and the price from that lengthens as the horses approach the starting post.
