A done deal in the 2012 Ballon D’Or betting as bookies make shortlisted Messi overwhelming favourite

Is the 2012 FIFA Ballon d’Or already a done deal. Since FIFA announced their three man shortlist of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Cristiano Ronaldo, the whole football world is expecting Argentine Messi to walk off with his fourth Ballon D’Or award. Is it really that much of a foregone conclusion? The answer is probably yes, as the three La Liga superstars await to hear the fate of the result in January. Messi remains the strong odds on favourite to take the title, as he little genius netted a remarkable 73 goals for his club Barcelona last season and his closing in on the remarkable Gerd Muller milestone of netting 85 goals in a calendar year. Should Messi get that then there really is going to be little contest in the FIFA Ballon D’or. With still a month to go at the time of writing in the year, and with Messi just three goals short of breaking the Bayern Munich striker’s 1972 record, it would be a miracle if it didn’t happen.

Even now though he looks well set to take the honour, as overwhelming 1/6  favourite with online bookmaker Ladbrokes. Messi is still just 25 years old with the world at his feet, he is Mr Barcelona and arguably one of, if not the greatest to ever strap on a pair of boots. He has already won three Champions League trophies, six La Liga titles and two FIFA Club World Club Cups, not to mention his ever expanding list of personal honours. His claim to be the best in the world ever could be confirmed next year if he becomes the first man to ever claim four Ballon D’Or titles.

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to finish up in second behind Messi once again and is trading as 13/2 second favourite. The Portugal star took Real Madrid to the Spanish league title last season, netting 60 goals for Jose  Mourinho’s side last season. In three of the last four season’s Messi and Ronaldo have finished first and second respectively in the FIFA Ballon D’Or and while Messi’s Blaugrana team mate Andres Iniesta has had another stellar year for club and country, taking Spain to their Euro 2012 title, he is probably not going to break things up, not out at a price of 10/1 with Ladbrokes.

We will have to wait until January 7th in Zurich, Switzerland to find out the result of the biggest individual award in world football.
