Bookmakers fearing a Murray & Konta Wimbledon double blow9th July 2017 / lee
What an occasion it would be over at SW19 if Andy Murray and Johanna Konta could walk away with the men’s and women’s titles respectively this summer. That would the grandest of Grand Slams from the home perspective of course. After going into the tournament with very little backing, reigning champion Andy Murray has seen a lot more action going down on him in the outright winner market, after some steady progress through the tournament.
He seems to be up for the fight and is generally playing with outright aggression, which isn’t his normal game. After a season disrupted by illness and injury, perhaps he is just letting it all out. Murray is an 11/2 shot at Ladbrokes to win the Wimbledon title for the third time to go and defend his title successfully, but he still has Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer knocking around the tournament.
But Murray is in the mix and the crowds are playing their part. They are taking well to Johanna Konta as well, who is further into the tournament than ever before. The plucky and classy 26 year old showed all the fight in the world in beating Donna Vekic in the second round and she goes to the second week of action at SW19 as 9/2 outright favourite at Ladbrokes. That was after beating back at 12/1 ahead of the tournament.
While there is pressure on her now to perform, the early exit of tournament favourite Karolina Pliskova will help Konata’s cause a lot. So can the Brit, roared on by the home support go all the way and land what would be her first Grand Slam title, even though the grass isn’t her strongest surface?
Just imagine if Murray and Konta both won titles at Wimbledon this year and just imagine what kind of financial damage that would do to bookmakers.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “It’s rare we find ourselves in a position like this, but Serena Williams’ absence has blown the door wide open for a patriotic double for punters.”
“Both Murray and Konta have been great so far, and that’s left plenty thinking it could be a record-breaking Wimbledon for Britain.”
