Brazil vacancy to damage Chelsea’s future plans of landing Guardiola?

With the markets quieting down on the Next Permanent Chelsea manager, following the installation of former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez at Stamford Bridge at least until the end of the season, there was an interesting turn of events which could affect the long term future market. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has made no secret of his admiration for former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola. The Russian Billionaire has been a big fan for a long time of the footballing ethics of Guardiola and would love to tempt him to Stamford Bridge. There are complications over that, including the cost of tax issues and the fact that the Spaniard is on a self imposed sabbatical away from the game after leaving the Nou Camp in the summer.

The fact that Rafa Benitez has only been given temporary charge at Stamford Bridge speaks volumes that Abramovich has yet to get the man he really wants. The high turn around in managerial traffic at Stamford Bridge has not been anything which has really hurt Chelsea in the past, because they have been highly successful in Abramovich’s reign at the club. Rafa Benitez may well get the nod if he brings a modicum of success and gets the best out of Fernando Torres over the remainder of the season, but even if he had been given a full term contract now it wouldn’t have ruled out a swap as soon as Guardiola became available.

Abramovich is that ruthless and will probably keep pushing until he gets Guardiola in his ranks. However, the latest turn in the future of Guardiola, came when Brazil sacked their coach Mano Menezes on Friday. This is a major development with a vacant position available as the Selecao head coach. Apparently, through a source close to Guardiola, if he were to be offered the job of coaching Brazil, he would end his sabbatical and take up the role immediately. No-one is really sure what happened with Menezes, but the pressure of Brazil performing on home soil at the 2014 World Cup is immense.

Pep Guardiola in charge of Brazil on home soil would make them massive favourites for winning the 2014 World Cup. Brazil are already being quoted as 7/2 favourites at online bookmaker Bet365 to take the trophy, with Argentina and Spain at 11/2. “The only team in the world that he [Guardiola] would start coaching tomorrow is the Selecao. And he would be world champion with Brazil,” the source is quoted as saying.

So does that do long term damage for Chelsea’s hopes of getting Guardiola? If so, it would leave a big hole in the Chelsea Next Permanent Manager betting if Benitez does not start getting results under his belt quickly at Stamford Bridge.
