Rebuild time for Manchester United
There was a surge of form from Manchester United when the club turned to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season following the departure of Jose Mourinho. But then the wheels came off a little bit as they won only three of their last nine league games. They did make some moves in the summer transfer window, but probably not as much as they would have wanted.
In has come defenders Aaron Wan Bissaka and Harry Maguire. Another youngster, winger Daniel James joined too. But that’s it, it was a quiet window for them in terms of new arrivals. They have managed to hold on to Paul Pogba, although a move to Spain could still happen as the transfer windows in the rest of Europe close later than the English Premier League. The Red Devils have moved out striker Romelu Luakau who looked as if he just didn’t want to play in OGS’s system.
Important to start well at home
The Red Devils took a W10 D6 L3 record at Old Trafford last season so it wasn’t all that bad. There is going to be a little more pressure on them in this game being on home soil. Last season they started their campaign on home soil and produced a victory.
That was a 2-1 win over Leicester with Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw getting on the scoresheet. Marcus Rashford is favourite in the 13/8 anytime goalscorer market* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 8th, 2019 at 5:49 p.m.) for this fixture.
Across the course of the season, both teams scored in 74% of league fixtures at Old Trafford. Getting a win against one of the other predicted challengers for a top-four finish is going to be so important for their early-season confidence. It would would afford the Red Devils the chance of getting a bit of early momentum going.
Top Six Improvement
A sixth-place finish in the Premier League is not going to be good enough for the Red Devils. The reason that they ended up there was because of their form against the other top six. Manchester United only posted a W1 D5 L6 record in their twelve games against the other top-seven finishers. So that was a huge points drop for them. They went D4 L2 in their six home games against the top seven.
Can they improve upon that? They did have a decent return of goals on home soil, averaging 1.74 goals per home fixture during the campaign. They weren’t particularly great at the back though and even keeper David de Gea had an end of season loss of confidence. But anyway, it’s a fresh start and with the money spent on new defenders, they have to improve upon a record of clean sheets in just 11% of home games. Both teams to score is at 3/4 odds* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 8th, 2019 at 5:49 p.m.).
Are Chelsea set for struggles?
Chelsea have the untested manager Frank Lampard at the helm for this season. He moved over from Derby in the summer after the Rams had lost the Championship Play-Off Final. So there is naturally going to be big question marks over him and it is a departure for the club who have been going for established managers for some time now.
The Blues haven’t been able to sign anyone because of their transfer ban as well, so that is another huge question mark over them. Will they have the depth in their squad to make another run at a top-four finish? The Blues were third last season but with problems in putting the ball in the back of the net. Eden Hazard carried them in that regard. He is now at Real Madrid.
Will those problems persist? This is some major test for Lampard in his first EPL game. AS Solksjar has had time working with the squad in games from last season, he will have an idea of what is going on. Lampard however, is going to need some time to figure out what his best plan of attack is. What is laid out on the training ground, may not quite transpire out in the heat of the battle.
The odds on Manchester United to beat Chelsea of 11/10 look a pretty reasonable option* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 8th, 2019 at 5:49 p.m.). The Red Devils should have a lot of pace about them and they will probably look to use that pace advantage early in the game to rattle the visitors. That could lead them to drive on and collect three points.
