Odds on Portugal to beat Switzerland 2019-06-0530th May 2019 / lee
Portugal have the slight advantage going into the UEFA Nations League Finals in that they are on home soil. So they have a wonderful chance in front of their own support to deliver the first ever Nations League title. But as they know from their gripping World Cup 2018 qualification campaign Switzerland are more than capable of throwing down a serious challenge. This should be a gripping contest. The odds on Portugal to beat Switzerland are at 4/6* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 8:00 am p.m.)

Ronaldo back for Portugal
Portugal played their entire Nations League group stage without Cristiano Ronaldo. But the Juventus star has rejoined the international squad now for this crucial match. He is the 11/5 first goalscorer favourite for the fixture* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 8:00 am p.m.).
Andre Silva incidentally scored in three of Portugal’s four group stage games. The winner of this fixture will meet either the Netherlands or England in the final on June 9th at the home of FC Porto.
Impressive Nations League group campaign
But the young Portuguese side showed a great deal of fight, character and class in topping their Nations League group. They were up against Italy and Poland there in what appeared to be a pretty evenly matched group. Portugal got their key results in their first two matches, a home win over the Italians and a thrilling 3-2 win out in Poland. Then it was a case of just hanging on really, playing out draws against their two opponents in the reverse matches. The lack of form between the other two teams certainly helped out Portugal’s case.
Low Scoring Duel?
Three of Portugal’s four games in the Nations League Group Stage ended up under 2.5 goals so this may be a tight battle. The Portuguese are currently a hard team to beat at the end of the season. They have only suffered the one loss in their last fifteen games, competitive and friendly fixtures. That one loss in the sequence was when they crashed out of the 2018 World Cup quarter-finals against Uruguay.
Portugal are on an eight match undefeated streak of form at the moment, so naturally, they are going to be competitive in this game. In their opening European Championship qualifiers towards the end of March, they played out draws at home against Ukraine and Serbia. In their last four games played there have been two 0-0 draws and two 1-1 draws. Given the pressure of this situation under 2.5 goals may be a good option at 10/11 odds* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 8:00 am p.m.)
World Cup 2018 Qualification battle
Back in World Cup 2018 qualification, there was a battle between Switzerland and Portugal at the summit of UEFA Group B. There was interesting tussle all the way, as the Swiss had won their first nine games on the bounce, including a 2-0 home win over the Portuguese. But Portugal kept pace with them by winning their other eight group stage games ahead of their second meeting in the final round of qualification action.
So all Switzerland had to do was hold out for a draw. But they couldn’t handle the pressure in Lisbon Portugal got at them. The Portuguese posted their 2-0 win and topped the group on goal difference to book the automatic spot at the World Cup. Switzerland did join them there though as they won their playoff tie. But that game in Lisbon really showed the strength of Portugal in winning against a side who basically only needed to shut up shop.
Home form counts
Portugal are unbeaten in their last five home games, taking a clean sheet in two of those five games. So given that they were given the hosting responsibilities for the Nations League final, you have to think that that is going to be a big advantage for them. Switzerland are not an easy side to beat and this is likely to be tight and tense. The odds on Portugal to beat Switzerland to nil at 15/8* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 8:00 am p.m.) may carry some appeal for punters, especially with the one side getting Ronaldo back into their ranks.
It has to be Portugal who finds a way to make it the final. The odds on Portugal to beat Switzerland in the To Qualify market are as short as 1/3 and therefore the bookies clearly expect them to progress* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 8:00 am p.m.). We would back that up in what will probably be a low scoring game.
