Can the early form of Kane inspire Spurs?
There are few better feelings than when your top striker hits the back of the net in the opening league game of a season. It eases so much pressure right out of the gate. That is what Harry Kane did in Tottenham’s opening game for the season against Aston Villa. In fact, Kane netted twice in the final five minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to give the Lilywhites a 3-1 win over the Villains.
So instead of stressing about when the goals are going to come, or who is going to step up to the plate if Kane was on a goal drought, then his goals should do wonders for settling Spurs into the new season. Can they take that bit of momentum, move it forward and pull off an upset against Manchester City?
The odds on Tottenham to beat Man City are large at 15/2* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 14th, 2019 at 6:12 p.m.). But it’s not a bad time for them to be heading to the Etihad.
No early-season pressure
Spurs aren’t expected to win this game, and such a difficult away game coming so early in the campaign means that there is little pressure on them for it. So it could help Mauricio Pochettino’s side out on their long journey north. The other aspect of this coming so early is that the defence of City may not be quite as dialled in and focused as it will be when they have had a few competitive games under their belt.
Naturally, Spurs would need a big impact from Harry Kane, who is 2/1 in the anytime goalscorer market* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 14th, 2019 at 6:12 p.m.). They also look to have done a very smart bit of business over the summer in the signing of Tanguy Ndombele. He got Tottenham’s opener against Aston Villa last weekend with a sublime finish. So they, of course, have their assets and should be fresh enough to make a challenge.
Last season’s meetings
Spurs did get a win over Manchester City last season. That was in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tussle, a 1-0 home success. Spurs managed to stand toe to toe with the Citizens in the return leg as well, losing 4-3 on the night but winning the tie on away goals. That was a momentous success for Tottenham.
Tottenham did lose both league meetings with City last season, but they were only 1-0 losses. In the game at the Etihad, Spurs didn’t have Harry Kane fit either. So they kept things tight against the Citizens and made City work hard for their returns. So now can Spurs find that extra touch to go just a little bit better and get a win? Tottenham are W1 D1 L2 in their last four league visits to Man City.
City’s home form
City were dominant last season, winning all but one of their home games during their campaign in the league. They are the reigning champions and their fourteen-match winning streak at the end of last season to win the league by a point over Liverpool, was just spectacular. They are the ones to beat still and Pep Guardiola will have hit men geared up for this big early test.
Manchester City were 5-0 winners at West Ham last weekend in their opening game of the season. But in the first twenty minutes of that match, West Ham were the better of the two teams. The Irons couldn’t find an edge up front to get themselves into the lead, but Spurs may have that extra quality to pounce if they can get on the front foot early. There’s never an easy game against City, but Spurs have to believe.
Yes, the odds on Tottenham to beat Manchester City are pretty hefty ones 15/2* (betting odds taken from bet365 on August 14th, 2019 at 7.35 pm). But that is an odds quote which just will perhaps tempt punters into considering the Lilywhites.
