Odds on Tottenham to beat Manchester United 2018-01-3131st January 2018 / lee
Tottenham could collect what would feel like a bonus three points in midweek as they play host to Manchester United. The Lilywhites start the midweek round of matches in fifth place in the top flight, five points behind fourth-placed Liverpool. The Reds heaped a bit more pressure on Tottenham in midweek with a positive victory out at Huddersfield to open up that five gap over the Lilywhites in the standings. So Spurs now have to work do to just cut the deficit back to the two points to the top four.
Spurs are five points worse off than they were at this stage last season and they have a real fight on their hands to get into the top four. Three points in this one would move them up on 48 points, leaving them five points behind Manchester United still who start the fixture in second place in the league. So can Spurs deliver and gain some revenge as well for having suffered a loss at Old Trafford against Manchester United earlier in the season?
Tottenham v Manchester United Odds*
Tottenham 5/4, Draw 23/10, Man Utd 11/5
This is the time for them to step up and deliver and it would also restore a bit of confidence for them if they could pull it off because they have had some disappointing results lately. They have drawn with West Ham and Southampton in recent league games and then they put in a really poor shift out at League Two side Newport County on the weekend in the FA Cup and Harry Kane had to come to the rescue late on.
Still, Spurs have good league form going at Wembley with four wins in their last five in the Capital and they are unbeaten in eleven home fixtures now in the Premier League. They have also scored well, averaging over two goals per game as well on home soil. Defensively they have conceded an average 0.75 goals per game, keeping a clean sheet in 42%of their home games. So the numbers do stack up for them and they have also won their last two home games against United, unbeaten in their last five against the Red Devils.
So Spurs have great home form behind them and they have scored in each of their last nine. Home and away combined they have scored in each of their last twelve league fixtures. Harry Kane is the 10/3 first goalscorer favourite at Paddy Power for the midweek clash and he has scored ten of his 21 league goals this season at home. Between them, Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min have scored twelve of Tottenham’s last seventeen home goals.
Naturally, they aren’t going to get an easy game against Manchester United, as no-one rarely does. The Red Devils are six matches unbeaten away from home at the moment and have won five of their last seven league fixtures away from Old Trafford. United have scored at least two goals in five of their last seven league games home and away and they have not conceded a single goal in any of their last four league games.
Tottenham needs the win in this one as they enter a tough run of games. Following this face a trip to Liverpool and then host arsenal at home in the Premier League. So these next three games could make or break their chance at top four finish this season. They won’t want to kick off the sequence with a defeat at Wembley against the Red Devils.
