Paddy Power refund on Sergio Garcia’s failed Masters title defence11th April 2018 / lee
Really Sergio Garcia’s recent Masters title defence couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start. Twelve months ago he was on top of the World having claimed the first major of his career. However, it was a miserable return to Augusta, the scene of his greatest golf triumph. In the first round, he fell right out of contention on the par-five 15th.
He fired five balls into the drink and walked away with an octuple-bogey 13. At least he broke a record, that was the worst ever score recorded in the hole itself, and with him finishing the first round nine over par, what was the worst first round by a defending champion in Masters history. Only amateur Harry Ellis recorded a worse first round.
Paddy Power was there for their customers though who had backed the Spaniard for a title defence.
“Following the reigning champ’s disastrous return to Augusta, we’ve refunded thousands to punters who backed Sergio to win this year’s Masters,” said a spokesperson for the firm.
“At the par-five 15th, the Spaniard needed a whopping 13 shots to find the cup – the worst score ever carded for that hole!
“If it’s any consolation Sergio, I would’ve been chuffed with any one of those chips. And also carding a 13 on that hole. It’s unlucky for some but not for our punters.”
