Sir Alex Ferguson’s Harry the Viking gets 16/1 for Grand National from BetFred

February 13th, 2013 / lee

Online betting site BetFred have suggested that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson could be on for a pretty good year in football and away from it. With some bookmakers already settling bets on the Red Devils winning the English Premier League this season, holding a twelve point gap with twelve matches to go, United look a sure bet for domestic success. Away from his Old Trafford duties, Sir Alex Ferguson has received some good backing, as BetFred have made his charge Harry the Viking a decent 16/1 shot to land the 2013 Grand National.

Gunning for National glory, Sir Alex Ferguson has two runners lined up to take on the famous Aintree race this term, with What A Friend also going in the market as well, but who is out as a longer shot of 40/1 to land the test of endurance. The 2013 Grand National runs on Saturday, April 6th and there is plenty of action in the ante post market already at online betting site BetFred. On Tuesday, February 13th, there was a lunch at the Savoy Hotel in London announcing the official weights for the 2013 John Smith’s Grand national. With Sir Alex Ferguson jointly owning two of the entrants, can he get his hands on the big horse racing prize?

Trained by Paul Nicholls, it was back in mid January that it was announced that Harry the Viking would be lining up for the 2013 Grand National. The eight year old finished second to Teaforthree in the four-miler at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival and the last time he got a run out was in the Hennessy when he finished a lowly ninth behind Bobs Worth. Ferguson himself have been involved in the world of horse racing for a good decade, gaining success with a Rock of Gibraltar, and What a Friend took the Totesport bowl at the 2011 Grand National meeting. Is a Premier League and Grand National double on the cards for Sir Alex Ferguson?

Betfred boss Fred Done said: ”I’ve already paid out on Manchester United winning the title and that’s cost me over £300,000 but Fergie winning the Grand National would cost me a lot more. The world’s greatest manager is 16/1 to win the world’s greatest steeplechase.”

Meanwhile born and bred United fan Fred Done believes the Red Devils can knock Real Madrid out of the Champions League after a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu.

“The league is in the bag, that’s why I’ve paid out early, but I honestly think United can add the Champions League and the FA Cup. I had my doubts at the start of the season but I believe this team is better than the treble winners of 1999. It’s 20/1 to happen and as a United fan, I would love to pay out on that.”
