Stoke win after bookmaker pays out on them to get relegated22nd January 2018 / lee
Paddy Power got a bit of a jolt on the weekend, following their decision to pay out early on Stoke suffering a relegation from the Premier League this season. When the club announced that the man they had hired to replace the outgoing Mark Hughes was Paul Lambert, they immediately saw the underwhelmed reaction and a large outcry of disappointment from Stoke fans, that the bookmaker decided to settle on all bets backing the Potters to be relegated.
Lambert was not the first choice for Stoke and they made that clear. It was former Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores that they wanted to take over at the club, but that didn’t work out for them. Before his announcement, Lambert was nothing more than a 100/1 shot to be the Next Stoke Manager with Paddy Power.
When Lambert was appointed, fans took to social media to voice their frustrations about Lambert, who was out of work at the time after Championship jobs with Blackburn and Wolves. It was even joked that at least that second-tier experience would come in handy next season. When Lambert was given the hot seat, Stoke were rated at 15/8 to get the drop after the as well as being 10/1 to finish bottom. So any punters who had backed either of those received an early pay out.
But the Potters responded in style on the weekend as they went out and took a 2-0 home victory over Huddersfield to give themselves a boost. That will have at least given them a bit more belief that they can get out of their relegation mess in this tough season. Stoke, who have the worst defensive record in the Premier League, snapped a thirteen match streak without a clean sheet for them with the weekend’s win.
Also, they go into a run of good games, where points should be available for them as they face Watford, Bournemouth and Brighton in their next three Premier League games.
Paddy Power have paid out early on Premier League relegation before. They paid out on the very first day of the 2008/09 season for Stoke to be relegated, but Tony Pulis ended up costing the bookmaker as he guided the Potters up into mid table safety.
Paddy Power paid out on Stoke to be relegated from the Premier League on all singles bets placed up to midnight on 14/01/2018.
