Aston Villa vs Manchester City Premier League Preview, January 12th 4.30 pm

Manchester City are scrapping it out with Leicester for second place in the Premier League at the moment. They will be heading to the Midlands to take on Aston Villa who have big concerns at the other end of the table. Villa have won two of their last three league games, but head towards the weekend only a point above the drop zone. Read our Aston Villa vs Manchester City betting tips for more.

Can the Villains survive their home game against Man City?

Aston Villa have come up with a win in two of their last three league games (L1). Those were one-goal margin wins over the struggling Norwich and Burnley. There are other ways to look at their current form, however. Like then having lost five of their last seven league games played, and having secured just two victories in their last eight. The home record that Villa have taken this season in the EPL is W4 D2 L4. They have averaged 1.3 goals per game there. The Villains are on a seven-match scoring streak on home turf.

13 of Villa’s last sixteen league games have gone over 2.5 goals. Considering that they are facing Manchester City, it won’t likely be a good thing for Villa if this is a high-scoring contest. Only Southampton and Norwich closed out New Years’ Day having conceded more league goals than Villa. All three of Villa’s home wins this season were against teams who finished the January 1st action in the bottom half of the table. Villa have hosted the top two of Liverpool this season and lost both.

Aston Villa vs Manchester City Head to Head

City secured a 3-0 home win over Aston Villa at the end of October
The Citizens have won six of the last seven meetings (D1) in all competitions
Villa have only scored in one of their last seven against Man City
Four of the last five meetings have made it over the 2.5 goal line

Citizenship the scoring power to take a good away win

It has been back to back league wins for Manchester City, home successes against Sheffield United and Everton. On their travels in the top flight for this campaign, the Citizens are W6 D1 L3 and playing with 10-men, suffered a loss at Wolves in their last road game. City have plenty of goals about them of course, averaging 2.7 per road game. 80% of their road games have made it above the 3.5 goal line. City have struck at least two goals in each of their last five Premier League fixtures.

Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions have put together a 13 match scoring streak in the league, scoring in all away games played in the campaign. The Citizens have been leading at the halftime break in six of their road games and City have scored at least 2 goals in 10 of their last 11 away matches in the Premier League. They have also opened the scoring in 8 of their 10 road fixtures. City have scored in both halves in 70% of road fixtures, and will likely be well on top in possession in this fixture once again, as they were when they hosted the Villains earlier in the season.

Who will win – Aston Villa vs Manchester City Predictions

A win should be forthcoming for Manchester City as they head to the Midlands. They both played in the EFL Cup in midweek, but Villa played a day later and expended a lot more energy than the Citizens did. City should get their chances. Away win.

Leicester are the clear favourites in this tie to make it through to the final, where either Man city or Man Utd will be waiting. This is a great opportunity for the Foxes to make a Wembley final now. With home advantage in this first leg, there is a golden chance for them to open up a strong lead in the tie. Then they would only have to worry about game management for the return leg later in the month. Read our Leicester vs Aston Villa betting tips for more.

Leicester firm favourites for the home leg of EFL Cup tie

Leicester’s form did drop a little bit in December as they faced some tough matches, but they have gathered themselves again. The Foxes are back in form with a three-match winning streak in all competitions going. On the weekend they beat Wigan in the FA Cup, following on from league successes against West Ham and Newcastle. Leicester have been making a lot of changes to their starting elevens recently, to keep fresh. It has worked as they have taken back to back clean sheets. They had been on a six-match streak without one before that.

Liverpool are the only side to pay a visit to the King Power this season and win there. Overall in this season in all competitions, Leicester have taken a W8 D2 L1 record at home, banking a total of five clean sheets in that sequence. There has been some drama for them in this EFL Cup campaign ad Leicester needed penalties to get past both Newcastle and Everton along the way. They also took out Luton and Burton. Leicester have not lost an EFL Cup tie in 90 minutes since a 1-0 defeat against Shrewsbury back in 2014.

Leicester vs Aston Villa Head to Head

The Foxes won 4-1 at Villa in December EPL action
Leicester are undefeated in their last three games against Villa (W2 D1)
Villa are W3 D2 L2 in the EFL Cup head to head with Leicester
The last League Cup meeting at Leicester was in 2006 with Villa winning 3-2

Villa’s defence still a major problem for them

Would Aston Villa trade a place in the EFL Cup final for top-flight safety this season? That is sort of the situation that they are in, as they are having a poor league campaign. But here they are, two games from Wembley. In the last round, Villa basically had a bye in the EFL Cup as they were at home against a Liverpool youth team. Villa won 5-0. That built on their successes over Crewe, Brighton and Wolves in this season’s competitions. Aston Villa have been consistent in scoring at least two goals in all four of their EFL Cup fixtures this season. Can they get on the board against the Foxes at the King Power?

There has been a total of six defeats from their last nine games across all competitions (W3) by the Villains. Their defence keeps letting them down and they have not picked up a clean sheet in any away game played in any competition this season. The Villains have conceded at least two goals in all but one of their last eight away games. On the weekend they lost 2-1 at Championship side Fulham in the FA Cup. In their last five away games in the EFL Cup Villa have taken four wins (L1). However, only one of the games in that sequence was against top-flight opposition, this season’s win at Brighton.

Leicester vs Aston Villa Tips & Odds

HT/FT Leicester/Leicester at 20/21
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 29th, 2020 at 6:35 p.m.)

Who will win – Leicester vs Aston Villa Predictions

Leicester are still looking rock solid and after some good squad management over the busy December period, they are fresh and sharp. Aston Villa just don’t look as if they are going to have the quality at the back to get away from the King Power unscathed. Home win to nil.

Fulham vs Aston Villa FA Cup Preview, 4th January 3.01 pm

This should be an interesting FA Cup third-round tie because there looks to be a genuine chance of an underdog success happening. Fulham are going well at Craven Cottage this season in the Championship, where they are on a promotion push. Will they have too much for Premier League strugglers Aston Villa, who are likely to come under some pressure on their trip to London? Read our Fulham vs Aston Villa betting tips for more.

Can Cottagers bring down Aston Villa

Championship side Fulham may have some plausible prospects in this FA Cup tie. They have already gone up against Premier League opposition this season, as they faced Southampton in the EFL Cup back in August. The Cottagers lost, but will likely be sending out a stronger starting eleven for this contest. It has been four wins in their last six home fixtures across all competitions. There has been a goal scored by Fulham in all but one of their last eleven fixtures at Craven Cottage. Recently, they went up against current Championship leaders Leeds there and Fulham produced an excellent home win.

Fulham have played host to Premier League opposition in two of the last three seasons of the FA Cup. They lost both of them, games against Tottenham and Southampton. They also made a third-round exit on home turf last season when Oldham came for a visit. So it has been just one win in their last seven home games in the FA Cup for Fulham. But it is the overall form which they have produced there this season which may count. Especially as they are taking on an Aston Villa team who have lacked defensive qualities this season.

Fulham vs Aston Villa Head to Head

Fulham have won three of the last four meetings
The last time they met was in the 2018 Championship play-off final
The FA Cup head to head is at one win each

Can Aston Villa win at Fulham?

There is going to be a big fight from Villa to come over the second half of the season to sustain their top-flight status. They have been scoring pretty well, but they have been fairly shambolic in defence. Aston Villa go into the FA Cup break with the third-worst defensive record in this season’s Premier League. So how will they get on against a Championship-level attack? Will the Villa defence have an easier time? It has been five defeats for Villa in their last seven away games (W1 D1) which were all top-flight fixtures.

There has been some cup form from Villa this season. They will be lining up in the EFL Cup semi-final after taking victories on the road at Crewe and Brighton, before home successes over Wolves and then a Liverpool youth side. On their travels, Aston Villa’s FA Cup form needs to come into focus. It is a D1 L4 record they have from their last five road games. They have conceded at least two goals in each of those four losses as well. The Villains have taken just one victory in their last seven games in the competition, home and away combined. Last season they bowed out in the third round against Championship side Swansea.

Fulham vs Aston Villa Tips & Odds

Home win at 11/10
Fulham to win & both teams to score at 11/4

* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on January 2nd 2020 at 2:49 p.m.)

Who will win – Fulham vs Aston Villa Predictions

Fulham, who have enjoyed themselves at Craven Cottage this season, may well have enough to break Villa. The defence of the visitors is not good and are bound to give up some chances against their Championship opponents. The home win has plenty of appeal in this FA Cup third-round tie.

Can Burnley sink Villa into further trouble?

It has been two straight defeats for Burnley in the top flight. That is five losses in their last seven now actually. So they are not in tip-top shape. Burnley have lost three of their last five at Turf Moor and suffered a 2-0 reverse against Manchester United on the weekend there. It is a balanced W5 L5 record from ten home games that the Clarets have produced. Each of their five home successes was achieved with a clean sheet. All five of their wins were against sides who start the new year outside of the top nine.

So that’s a good omen for them as they face Villa. Burnley’s average of goals is 1.3 per fixture at Turf Moor. They have conceded at an average of 1.5 per game. Burnley have been behind at the end of the first half in five of their ten home games. They are still sitting nine points better off than they were at this stage of last season’s campaign, despite their up and down form. Burnley have scored 69% of their home goals after the halftime break and they have not played out a draw in any of their last 13 top flight fixtures. Each of their last four have gone under 2.5 goals.

Burnley vs Aston Villa Head to Head

Villa and Burnley drew 2-2 earlier in the season
The Clarets are eaten in three against Villa (W1 D2)
Both teams have scored in five of the last six meetings in all competitions
The last two meetings at Turf Moor have ended in a 1-1 draw

Villa’s sliding into dangerous territory

Villa gave themselves a glimmer of hope of survival on Boxing Day by beating Norwich. But then in their next game, another crucial relegation scrap, they fell heavily to a 3-0 loss at Watford on the weekend. The Hornets were playing with ten men for the last twenty minutes or so and still Villa never looked like scoring. That was the fifth loss in six games for Villa and they are sinking into deeper trouble, into a position that’s going to be hard to get out of. The main issue with them is in defence. They have conceded at least two goals in six of their last seven.

Their away record is the stuff of nightmares, having lost 8 of 10 on the road (W1 D1). There has been an average of 2.2 goals per away game against them and 80% of their road fixtures have gone over 2.5 goals. The Villains are on a three match losing streak on their travels and have taken only one point away from their last six such games. They are still on the hunt for their first clean sheet away from home.. Going back to their defensive woes, Villa have shipped at least two goals in each of their last six Premier League away games.

Burnley vs Aston Villa Tips & Odds

Who will win – Burnley vs Aston Villa Predictions

It’s hard to put any trust in Aston Villa to come up with anything. They are in for a rough ride over the second half of the season. Burnley couldn’t get past Man Utd at Turf Moor on Saturday, but should have more luck against Villa’s flimsy defence. Home win.

Watford vs Aston Villa Premier League Preview, 28th December 3.00pm

This is such a big game for Watford’s survival hopes. They are second-from-bottom and five points behind Villa who are a place above them. So the Hornets really need to come up with the win in this one to keep hopes of staying up, alive. Villa secured a crucial victory over Norwich on the weekend, sinking the Canaries to the foot of the table. Read our Watford vs Aston Villa betting tips for more.

Hornets can handle the pressure

The pressure is on Watford big time here. A defeat in this one would see them fall eight points behind Villa who are starting third-from-bottom. That’s not something the Hornets can afford right now. Even though a win wouldn’t move them up the table, it would at least continue their improvement and keep hopes of staying up, alive. They start the weekend six points from safety. On Boxing Day they came up with a decent away point at Sheffield United in a 1-1 draw. Having beaten Manchester United in their last game at Vicarage Road, they will be happy to get back to home soil for this one. Their home form is only W1 D4 L4 for the entire campaign, but they are undefeated in two on home turf.

Home and away, Watford have won just 2 of their last 23 league games. They have only scored in two of their last five played as well, but that has been in back to back games. Liverpool are the only side to have beaten Watford in their last four outings, so there has been improvement by the Hornets. Three points against Villa would be huge for the Hornets heading into the second half of the season. Goalscoring has been a problem for them this season, and the Hornets have only tallied six at Vicarage Road. They have conceded at an average of 1.4 per home fixture. The Hornets have banked a clean sheet in 44% of home fixtures and six of the nine games at Vicarage Road this season have been level at half time.

Watford vs Aston Villa Head to Head

This is the first meeting since the 2015/16 EPL
Watford won both meetings that season
Both teams have scored in two of the last six meetings
Watford are W1 D1 L1 in three previous EPL home games against Villa

Villa’s defence a major concern

The Villains took their fourth clean sheet of the season to secure a nervy 1-0 home success over Norwich on Boxing Day. The Villains stayed in the bottom three, but are only one point from safety now. That was a huge result for them, and three points against Watford too would lift their survival hopes massively as it would cut the bottom two adrift, pretty much. Away from home in this campaign, Aston Villa have posted a poor W1 D1 L7 record. So that is really where the big question marks come in for them.

They have failed to collect a win in any of their last five road games, losing four of the games in that sequence. They have lost back to back fixtures away from Villa Park. But one positive for them, is that their scoring output hasn’t been bad at all in this campaign. They have scored in 8 of their last 9 league games. Aston Villa do have the worst away record in the top flight and only Southampton and Norwich have shipped more goals than they have. This really isn’t about what quality that they can come up with. It is about character.

Watford vs Aston Villa Tips & Odds

Home win at 19/20
Watford 1-0 correct score at 9/1

* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on December 27th, 2019 at 12:41 p.m.)

Who will win – Watford vs Aston Villa Predictions

Watford delivered a superb three points against Manchester United in their last game at Vicarage Road. Given that the defence of Aston Villa is virtually non-existent most of the time and with Watford running a tighter-ship, the Hornets may be able to dig out the home win here. The pressure is on for both of them in this one.

Can Villains give themselves a lifeline

Aston Villa had another setback in their survival quest in the top flight. They went down 3-1 against Southampton the weekend at Villa Park. Villa started the game on goal difference above the Saints, the only thing that was keeping them out of the drop zone. Now they go into Boxing Day action in it. That was the kind of fixture upon which the survival hopes of Villa look to be resting. This is a crucial period for their top-flight status because in their next two games they face Norwich and Watford. Those are the only two beneath them in the standings.

Aston Villa have lost their last four league games now and seven of their last nine (W1 D1). They have a W3 D2 L4 record behind them at Villa Park in his campaign, losing back to back games there in their current form. It has been an average of 1.3 goals per game this season by Villa (home and away combined). They have at least struck the back of the net in each of their last eight games, so that is a positive for them. But it is their defence which is failing them. Villa have shipped at least two goals in each of their last five league games. They need to find a way to ease the pressure.

Aston Villa vs Norwich Head to Head

Villa were 5-1 winner at Norwich earlier this season
The Canaries have won three of the last four league meetings
Both teams have scored in each of the last five meetings
Villa have won 4 of their last 5 home games against Norwich

Can Norwich pull out a win at Villa Park?

Norwich failed to hold on to a lead at home against Wolves on the weekend. In the end, they fell to a 2-1 loss which saw them suffer their third defeat in their last four league games (D1). It has been just one win taken by Norwich in their last thirteen league games and they are starting to get cut further adrift in the relegation zone. After their loss against Wolves, Nrowichw were left six points from safety. It has only been two points collected by them in their last five games, so the win doesn’t look all that likely for punters to back.

The one win that Norwich have taken on the road this season happened at Everton. That is part of a W1 D2 L6 record away from Carrow Road that they have earned. There has been a lack of output in front of goal from Norwich on their travels. They have tallied only five away goals in their nine games. The Canaries have conceded an average of 2 goals per game this season’s top flight. Despite that, just 22% of Norwich’s away games have made it over 2.5 goals. In total Norwich have lost 12 games this season in the league and eight of those have been by at least a two-goal margin. The Canaries have conceded 73% of their away goals in the first half of fixtures.

Aston Villa vs Norwich Tips & Odds

Home win at 19/20
Villa to win & BTTS at 9/4

* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on December 21st, 2019 at 3:52 p.m.)

Who will win – Aston Villa vs Norwich Predictions

The Villains, simply because of home soil, would have to be backed to win. Both teams will be feeling the pressure in this one and Villa have to perform much better than they did at home against Southampton on the weekend. Home win.
