Aston Villa vs Manchester City Premier League Preview, January 12th 4.30 pm

Manchester City are scrapping it out with Leicester for second place in the Premier League at the moment. They will be heading to the Midlands to take on Aston Villa who have big concerns at the other end of the table. Villa have won two of their last three league games, but head towards the weekend only a point above the drop zone. Read our Aston Villa vs Manchester City betting tips for more.

Can the Villains survive their home game against Man City?

Aston Villa have come up with a win in two of their last three league games (L1). Those were one-goal margin wins over the struggling Norwich and Burnley. There are other ways to look at their current form, however. Like then having lost five of their last seven league games played, and having secured just two victories in their last eight. The home record that Villa have taken this season in the EPL is W4 D2 L4. They have averaged 1.3 goals per game there. The Villains are on a seven-match scoring streak on home turf.

13 of Villa’s last sixteen league games have gone over 2.5 goals. Considering that they are facing Manchester City, it won’t likely be a good thing for Villa if this is a high-scoring contest. Only Southampton and Norwich closed out New Years’ Day having conceded more league goals than Villa. All three of Villa’s home wins this season were against teams who finished the January 1st action in the bottom half of the table. Villa have hosted the top two of Liverpool this season and lost both.

Aston Villa vs Manchester City Head to Head

City secured a 3-0 home win over Aston Villa at the end of October
The Citizens have won six of the last seven meetings (D1) in all competitions
Villa have only scored in one of their last seven against Man City
Four of the last five meetings have made it over the 2.5 goal line

Citizenship the scoring power to take a good away win

It has been back to back league wins for Manchester City, home successes against Sheffield United and Everton. On their travels in the top flight for this campaign, the Citizens are W6 D1 L3 and playing with 10-men, suffered a loss at Wolves in their last road game. City have plenty of goals about them of course, averaging 2.7 per road game. 80% of their road games have made it above the 3.5 goal line. City have struck at least two goals in each of their last five Premier League fixtures.

Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions have put together a 13 match scoring streak in the league, scoring in all away games played in the campaign. The Citizens have been leading at the halftime break in six of their road games and City have scored at least 2 goals in 10 of their last 11 away matches in the Premier League. They have also opened the scoring in 8 of their 10 road fixtures. City have scored in both halves in 70% of road fixtures, and will likely be well on top in possession in this fixture once again, as they were when they hosted the Villains earlier in the season.

Who will win – Aston Villa vs Manchester City Predictions

A win should be forthcoming for Manchester City as they head to the Midlands. They both played in the EFL Cup in midweek, but Villa played a day later and expended a lot more energy than the Citizens did. City should get their chances. Away win.

Burnley vs Aston Villa Premier League Preview, 1st January 12.30pm

The Clarets have lost their last two league games so they will be looking for a lift on home soil. Will they be able to deliver the three points against an Aston Villa side who came up a long way short at Watford on the weekend? Villa slumped to a heavy 3-0 loss against the Hornets which leaves them in a tough spot. Read our Burnley vs Aston Villa betting tips for more.

Burnley vs Aston Villa Betting Odds*

Draw 14/5

Can Burnley sink Villa into further trouble?

It has been two straight defeats for Burnley in the top flight. That is five losses in their last seven now actually. So they are not in tip-top shape. Burnley have lost three of their last five at Turf Moor and suffered a 2-0 reverse against Manchester United on the weekend there. It is a balanced W5 L5 record from ten home games that the Clarets have produced. Each of their five home successes was achieved with a clean sheet. All five of their wins were against sides who start the new year outside of the top nine.

So that’s a good omen for them as they face Villa. Burnley’s average of goals is 1.3 per fixture at Turf Moor. They have conceded at an average of 1.5 per game. Burnley have been behind at the end of the first half in five of their ten home games. They are still sitting nine points better off than they were at this stage of last season’s campaign, despite their up and down form. Burnley have scored 69% of their home goals after the halftime break and they have not played out a draw in any of their last 13 top flight fixtures. Each of their last four have gone under 2.5 goals.

Burnley vs Aston Villa Head to Head

Villa and Burnley drew 2-2 earlier in the season
The Clarets are eaten in three against Villa (W1 D2)
Both teams have scored in five of the last six meetings in all competitions
The last two meetings at Turf Moor have ended in a 1-1 draw

Villa’s sliding into dangerous territory

Villa gave themselves a glimmer of hope of survival on Boxing Day by beating Norwich. But then in their next game, another crucial relegation scrap, they fell heavily to a 3-0 loss at Watford on the weekend. The Hornets were playing with ten men for the last twenty minutes or so and still Villa never looked like scoring. That was the fifth loss in six games for Villa and they are sinking into deeper trouble, into a position that’s going to be hard to get out of. The main issue with them is in defence. They have conceded at least two goals in six of their last seven.

Their away record is the stuff of nightmares, having lost 8 of 10 on the road (W1 D1). There has been an average of 2.2 goals per away game against them and 80% of their road fixtures have gone over 2.5 goals. The Villains are on a three match losing streak on their travels and have taken only one point away from their last six such games. They are still on the hunt for their first clean sheet away from home.. Going back to their defensive woes, Villa have shipped at least two goals in each of their last six Premier League away games.

Who will win – Burnley vs Aston Villa Predictions

It’s hard to put any trust in Aston Villa to come up with anything. They are in for a rough ride over the second half of the season. Burnley couldn’t get past Man Utd at Turf Moor on Saturday, but should have more luck against Villa’s flimsy defence. Home win.

Watford vs Aston Villa Premier League Preview, 28th December 3.00pm

This is such a big game for Watford’s survival hopes. They are second-from-bottom and five points behind Villa who are a place above them. So the Hornets really need to come up with the win in this one to keep hopes of staying up, alive. Villa secured a crucial victory over Norwich on the weekend, sinking the Canaries to the foot of the table. Read our Watford vs Aston Villa betting tips for more.

Aston Villa 13/5

Hornets can handle the pressure

The pressure is on Watford big time here. A defeat in this one would see them fall eight points behind Villa who are starting third-from-bottom. That’s not something the Hornets can afford right now. Even though a win wouldn’t move them up the table, it would at least continue their improvement and keep hopes of staying up, alive. They start the weekend six points from safety. On Boxing Day they came up with a decent away point at Sheffield United in a 1-1 draw. Having beaten Manchester United in their last game at Vicarage Road, they will be happy to get back to home soil for this one. Their home form is only W1 D4 L4 for the entire campaign, but they are undefeated in two on home turf.

Home and away, Watford have won just 2 of their last 23 league games. They have only scored in two of their last five played as well, but that has been in back to back games. Liverpool are the only side to have beaten Watford in their last four outings, so there has been improvement by the Hornets. Three points against Villa would be huge for the Hornets heading into the second half of the season. Goalscoring has been a problem for them this season, and the Hornets have only tallied six at Vicarage Road. They have conceded at an average of 1.4 per home fixture. The Hornets have banked a clean sheet in 44% of home fixtures and six of the nine games at Vicarage Road this season have been level at half time.

Watford vs Aston Villa Head to Head

This is the first meeting since the 2015/16 EPL
Watford won both meetings that season
Both teams have scored in two of the last six meetings
Watford are W1 D1 L1 in three previous EPL home games against Villa

Villa’s defence a major concern

The Villains took their fourth clean sheet of the season to secure a nervy 1-0 home success over Norwich on Boxing Day. The Villains stayed in the bottom three, but are only one point from safety now. That was a huge result for them, and three points against Watford too would lift their survival hopes massively as it would cut the bottom two adrift, pretty much. Away from home in this campaign, Aston Villa have posted a poor W1 D1 L7 record. So that is really where the big question marks come in for them.

They have failed to collect a win in any of their last five road games, losing four of the games in that sequence. They have lost back to back fixtures away from Villa Park. But one positive for them, is that their scoring output hasn’t been bad at all in this campaign. They have scored in 8 of their last 9 league games. Aston Villa do have the worst away record in the top flight and only Southampton and Norwich have shipped more goals than they have. This really isn’t about what quality that they can come up with. It is about character.

Watford vs Aston Villa Tips & Odds

Home win at 19/20
Watford 1-0 correct score at 9/1

* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on December 27th, 2019 at 12:41 p.m.)

Who will win – Watford vs Aston Villa Predictions

Watford delivered a superb three points against Manchester United in their last game at Vicarage Road. Given that the defence of Aston Villa is virtually non-existent most of the time and with Watford running a tighter-ship, the Hornets may be able to dig out the home win here. The pressure is on for both of them in this one.

Can Villains give themselves a lifeline

Aston Villa had another setback in their survival quest in the top flight. They went down 3-1 against Southampton the weekend at Villa Park. Villa started the game on goal difference above the Saints, the only thing that was keeping them out of the drop zone. Now they go into Boxing Day action in it. That was the kind of fixture upon which the survival hopes of Villa look to be resting. This is a crucial period for their top-flight status because in their next two games they face Norwich and Watford. Those are the only two beneath them in the standings.

Aston Villa have lost their last four league games now and seven of their last nine (W1 D1). They have a W3 D2 L4 record behind them at Villa Park in his campaign, losing back to back games there in their current form. It has been an average of 1.3 goals per game this season by Villa (home and away combined). They have at least struck the back of the net in each of their last eight games, so that is a positive for them. But it is their defence which is failing them. Villa have shipped at least two goals in each of their last five league games. They need to find a way to ease the pressure.

Aston Villa vs Norwich Head to Head

Villa were 5-1 winner at Norwich earlier this season
The Canaries have won three of the last four league meetings
Both teams have scored in each of the last five meetings
Villa have won 4 of their last 5 home games against Norwich

Can Norwich pull out a win at Villa Park?

Norwich failed to hold on to a lead at home against Wolves on the weekend. In the end, they fell to a 2-1 loss which saw them suffer their third defeat in their last four league games (D1). It has been just one win taken by Norwich in their last thirteen league games and they are starting to get cut further adrift in the relegation zone. After their loss against Wolves, Nrowichw were left six points from safety. It has only been two points collected by them in their last five games, so the win doesn’t look all that likely for punters to back.

The one win that Norwich have taken on the road this season happened at Everton. That is part of a W1 D2 L6 record away from Carrow Road that they have earned. There has been a lack of output in front of goal from Norwich on their travels. They have tallied only five away goals in their nine games. The Canaries have conceded an average of 2 goals per game this season’s top flight. Despite that, just 22% of Norwich’s away games have made it over 2.5 goals. In total Norwich have lost 12 games this season in the league and eight of those have been by at least a two-goal margin. The Canaries have conceded 73% of their away goals in the first half of fixtures.

Villa can deliver the goods at home against the Saints

What a game this is for Villa. This is the pressure of survival. Three points would give them such a nice cushion. However, they are on a three-match losing streak currently and have suffered a loss in 6 of their last 8 played. That is a really poor return, and their defence has been fairly non-existent. Villa have shipped at least two goals in 7 of their last 8 league games. However, three of their four Premier League wins this season have come at Villa Park (W3 D2 L3).

Of their three home losses, two of them were excusable ones against Liverpool and Leicester. The Villains have averaged 1.4 goals per game at home in his campaign, the same rate at which they have conceded. So it is their away form which is where they have been hurt the most. 62% of league games at Villa Park this season have made it over 2.5 goals. Aston Villa have been ahead at the half time break in half of their home games and they have hit the back of the net in each of their last five home fixtures. Dean Smith’s men have netted 64% of their home goals in the first period of games.

Aston Villa vs Southampton Head to Head

This is the first meeting since the 2015/16 EPL season
Southampton took four points against Villa that season
The Saints are unbeaten in six games against Villa in all competitions
Villa are winless in four home games against the Saints (D1 L3)

Saints struggling on the road

There has been back to back defeats for Southampton in league action, both one-goal margin reverses against Newcastle and West Ham. Out on their Premier League travels this season Southampton have earned a W2 D2 L4 record. They are winless in five away from St Mary’s currently. There hasn’t been a lot on offer from them as an attacking unit away from home, scoring 9 in 8 games. A defeat here will mean that they close out the weekend three points from safety.

They can’t afford to lose against the team they are trying to catch. The Saints have scored 5 goals fewer than what Aston Villa have managed this season, while they have conceded 6 more than the Villains have done. Three of the four away defeats that Southampton have suffered have been by a margin of just one goal, as have six of the ten overall that they have gone through. The Saints have no clean sheet in any of their last 12 Premier League games home and away. They have shipped at least two in each of their last three on the road.

Aston Villa vs Southampton Tips & Odds

Villa 1 goal winning margin at 7/2

* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on December 18th, 2019 at 3:26 p.m.)

Villa could be up for this challenge. Neither defence has looked good but Villa have been scoring goals and can muster up a head of steam at home. This is a golden chance for them to relieve some pressure. Home win.

Sheffield United vs Aston Villa Premier League Preview, 14th December 3.00 pm

Aston Villa have lost four of their last six league games, despite some batting performances. That left them heading into the weekend only above the drop zone on goal difference. Blades can chop down Villa at the Lane

It was victory at Norwich last weekend that Sheffield United picked up. They needed that immediate response after having failed at home against Newcastle in their previous matches. At Bramall Lane in his campaign, Sheffield United have earned a W3 D1 L4 record. They were on a three-match unbeaten streak of home form before Newcastle turned up and edged them. That 2-0 loss against Newcastle is in the only game in which the Blades have failed to score in their last eight.

Sheffield United have both scored and conceded 9 goals at home this season, picking up a clean sheet in 38% of home games. The Blades have seen over 2.5 goals in 8 of their last 9 matches against Aston Villa in all competitions. In none of their last five league outings have the Blades earned a clean sheet, so that is a little slip by them. They still have the third-best defensive record in the league at the moment. United have conceded 78% of their home goals in the second half of games.

Sheffield United vs Aston Villa Head to Head

Sheffield United took four points against Villa in last season’s Championship
There were eleven goals scored in total in last season’s meetings
Eight of the last nine meetings have ended over 2.5 goals
The one previous EPL meeting at Bramall Lane ended in a 2-2 draw in 2006

Villains may lack the defensive strengths to hold out

The Villains have lost their last two games. Last weekend it was a 4-1 home drubbing by Leicester. Aston Villa have taken one league win in their last seven, losing five of those. So they are struggling, despite them churning out some decent competitive displays. They are lacking a bit of quality up front, it has to be said. But also defensively they can’t stop the flood of goals against, conceding at least two goals in six of their last seven played.

The away record of Villa this season is W1 D1 L6. 88% of their away games have gone over 2.5 goals, and 50% have gone over 3.5 goals. So there are usually entertaining games when Villa is involved. Dean Smith’s men have shipped at least two goals in each of their last four away games. Of the six losses that they have taken on the road this season, four of them have been by one goal margin only. Of the 17 away goals that Villa have conceded, 14 of them have been in the second half of fixtures.

Sheffield United vs Aston Villa Tips & Odds

Draw match outright at 27/10
1-1 correct score at 13/2
* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on December 12th, 2019 at 5:46 p.m.)

Who will win – Sheffield United vs Aston Villa Predictions

The Blades like to play an expansive game on home turf and given that there are plenty of gaps in the back line of Aston Villa, this should end up being a home win. It would be a great three points for United to continue their strong push in the top ten.
