At an emotional press conference on Friday, British tennis legend Andy Murray announced that his time for retirement is pretty close. He said that he had planned to step away from the game after Wimbledon 2019 but the pain that he to play through following his hip surgery last year, may not allow him to get that deep into the season.
Murray admitted that he could be retiring when his Australian Open campaign comes to an end. The Scotsman was in tears at the press conference ahead of the action at Melbourne Park, which starts on Monday. Murray will be leaving having left a major impression on the game. He has won three Grand Slams during his career.
Murray’s first round match at the Australian Open is against Spain’s Roberto Bautista-Agut and Murray is the underdog against the World Number 22. Murray enters the match at 10/3 odds to win* (betting odds was taken from Paddy Power on January 11tth, 2019 at 4:32 pm)
Bookamer Paddy Power announced on Friday that they had taken 56 bets on Murray winning this year’s Australian Open.
Paddy Power went further to announce that they have paid out on each of those 56 bets supporting Murray in Melbourne. Given that Murray has done next to nothing on the court since his surgery last year, winning the Australian Open this year was highly unlikely for him. Murray lost five finals at Melbourne Park during his career when he was on top of his game.
Murray is currently 80/1 odds to win the Australian Open 2019 but the early payout that Paddy Power has issued applies to bets placed online only prior to 11:15 am on January 11th, 2019.
What a remarkable Australian Open 2017 it has been. It has certainly been an event for the experienced greats as we have a Roger Federer v Rafael Nadal showdown in the men’s final and in the women’s on Saturday it is sisters Serena and Venus Williams on opposite sides of the net playing for the title. Serena Williams wasn’t as heavily backed as she usually is at Grand Slams because this was her return to action after about 6 months out of action. As for Venus, she was a huge price to land the title in the ante post market.
But we will see the ninth Grand Slam final battle between the two Williams’ sisters on the weekend and the last time that they were paired up for a Grand Slam final was back in 2009 at Wimbledon. It’s been that long. Serena is favourite to take the title, as she leads the head to head 16-11 and she has also won seven of the last eight against Venus as well. Serena has won the Australian Open six times before too, whereas her sister Venus will be looking to nail her first ever title success in Melbourne.
