21-year-old bet comes good as Trump wins Snooker Worlds

Betting News

Sometimes it is tough to wait for a bet to happen just over 90 minutes of a football match. So how about waiting for over twenty years for a bet to land you a big windfall? That was exactly what happened on Bank Holiday Monday as Judd Trump claimed his first ever Snooker World Championship title.

Trump raced away to an 18-9 victory in the match over former World Champion John Higgins to lift the title. It was a superb match with the quality of snooker on display at the Crucible in the stratosphere.

21 years ago, racing journalist Neil Morrice made a bold prediction. He placed a £10 bet with bookmaker Coral that a then eight-year-old Trump, would one day become a world champion in the sport. That was after Morrice had spotted him playing in a club just outside Bristol.

So Morrice clearly spotted something special about Trump and placed the wager at 1,000/1 odds that Trump would be a world champion before his 30th birthday. The bet was running out of time too, as Trump turns 30 next year.

Morrice’s prediction actually almost came good in 2001. That was when Trump made it to the final of the World Championships for the first time in his career. Strangely enough, it was John Higgins who he faced on that occasions and the young Trump pushed the Scottish legend all the way, falling 15-18 in the end to Higgins.

It has been a stunning season of success from Trump who has also landed his first ever Masters title this year. Trump is as short as 3/1 with some bookmakers* (Betting Odds were taken from Coral on May 8th, 2019 at 2:40 p.m.) to win the 2020 World Championships, a far cry from 1000/1 odds.
