As an online presence, Stan James is no more. The Kindred Group, who acquired the online sports betting division of Stan James for £19 million, in 2015 (its first UK-centric acquisition) have confirmed that the presence has been shut down online.
The Kindred Group announced that the full migration of customers from Stan James to Unibet has now been completed and now that all operations have been moved over to their lead platform Unibet which is where their online focus is at.
The group were pretty up front about all of its plans, stating that they would only be keeping the Stan James brand over for a ‘transitional period’ and that the plan was to close down Stan James online by early 2018, which they have done.
Stan James was created back in 1973 in Oxfordshire and in many regards, they were pioneers in the game as well, as they would offer markets through the old TV Teletext service as well as being a leader in telephone betting. They have around 90 betting shops up and down the country and they will remain in operation.
In continuing support of PDC darts, bookmaker Unibet have agreed on a multi-year deal to become the title sponsor of one of the organisation’s flagship tournaments, the Premier League of DArts. The operator has already done a great deal of sponsorship in the game as they are already sponsors of the Unibet European Championship, the Unibet World Grand Prix, the Unibet Champions League of Darts as well as the World Series Finals and Melbourne Darts Masters.
Now they have expanded their support of the action by signing on with the Premier League of Darts. The tournament is a sixteen week event with weekly rounds of action coming from different venues across the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands. For the 2018 season, they have expanded their reach as well because one of the weeks will make a stop in Berlin, Germany for the first time.
Unibet are going to be releasing a series of social media videos which relate to the PDC Premier League. The first one of the vibes is a ‘hidden camera’ trick featuring PDC Premier League champion Michael van Gerwen and world number three Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright.
Detailing Unibet’s commitment to darts, Kindred Group CCO Ebba Ljungerud stated: “Darts has been one of the fastest growing sports in our sponsorship portfolio in the UK and we are extremely excited about extending our partnership with the PDC to become the new sponsor of the Premier League. We are planning on making what we already know to be a great tournament even better.
“It’s grown to become the widest-reaching event in darts and we’re looking forward to 16 exciting nights across Europe. Darts is an action-packed betting sport and we will continue to bring our best-in-class activation and offer to all the fans. “
PDC Chairman Barry Hearn backed Unibet as title sponsor of the Premier League: “We’re delighted that Unibet have furthered their association with us in their sponsorship of the Premier League for the next three years.
“The Unibet Premier League will be bigger than ever in 2018, with our success in the UK, Ireland and more recently the Netherlands leading to the introduction of a league night in Berlin next year, and it promises to be a special tournament. The Premier League’s growth since 2005 has been a phenomenon in British sport and it’s another boost that Unibet were so keen to add this prestigious event to their growing darts sponsorship portfolio”.

The biggest night of the calendar year for online gaming operators was held recently at the HRC Artillery Garden in London. Enjoying a huge night of success was Swedish-based operator Unibet who claimed the “Operator of the Year” title at the EGR 2016 Operator Awards. But that was just one of three awards that the operator landed as they went on to claim the ‘Socially Responsible Operator’ and ‘Best Marketing Campaign’ for its multi-award winning “Luck Is No Coincidence” campaign as well.
A statement from Unibet Group Commercial Officer Ebba Langerud said: “This is a true testament to the great teamwork everyone in the Unibet Group contributes and how all of our brands and teams work together to achieve a common goal – to give our customers the best experience.”
But topping out the EGR’s ‘Sports Betting Operator’ of the year award was Bet365 once again on the night. That was the fourth year running that the Stoke-based operator has won the sports betting operating title and on top of they also won the ‘Best in-Play Sports Operator’ on the night as well. So Bet365 joined Unibet as the big winners of the night at the awards.
Other winners at the EGR 2016 awards included Sky Bet who successfully defended their titles of ‘Mobile Sports Product’ and ‘Mobile Operator’ of the year. Irish bookmaker, BetBright claimed its first ever EGR Award of ‘Best in-house Developed Product’
Operator Unibet have teamed up anti-gambling software company Betfilter to try and help stem problem gambling. Through the deal, Unibet will offer to pay a full subscription to the Betfilter software, to self-excluded gamblers in order to try and prevent them from feeding their addictions by using other gambling operators.
So Unibet will pay the Betfilter licensing cost to customers who are known to have a gambling problem. Problem gamblers would previously have been advised to go and get Betfilter software, which blocks access to all gambling-related websites, but that came at a cost of £49 per year. That is what Unibet will be covering.
“Unibet takes a proactive approach to identifying the signs of problem gambling, through our unique proprietary systems, but our customers also need support in refraining from gambling when needed,” Maris Bonello, integrity analytics manager of Unibet, said.
“That is why we are offering this software free to our customers,” Bonello continued.
As part of the deal, Unibet will also be offering free Betfilter licences to gambling addiction treatment centres, such as the UK’s Breakeven, to help people currently undergoing therapy.
“We are excited to work together with Unibet on trying to help online problem gamblers and also support treatment organisations with our blocking software,” Per Albertsen, a spokesperson for Betfilter, said.
“It is great to see a respected gaming operator like Unibet take a direct, responsible and serious approach towards helping online problem gamblers and their families,” he added.
The recent EGR Awards saw online operator Bet365 manage to retain the title of Sports Betting Operator” of the Year as the event and there could be more credentials on the way to them as the Playboy Club in Mayfair hosts the Betting on Football Awards 2015 and Bet365 are up for top honour.
They won the inaugural title last year at the Betting on Football Awards and so are back for another title defence of the top title there. Bet365 are in a fight with Sky Bet and Unibet to win the title of the Best Football Bookmaker.
The Best Football Bookmaker Award is just one of eight categories which will make up the ceremonial night with Skybet and Unibet competing for the Best Mobile Football Bookmaker while Ladbrokes and Bwin are in the mix to win the Best Football Marketing Campaign award.
The event is staged by SBC on December 2nd and the winners of each of the eight categories will be decided by delegates who attended the Betting on Football Conference (#bofcon) in an open vote.
