William Hill see major action in mobile betting over festive and New Year periodJanuary 18th, 2013 / lee
Christmas 2012 proved to be a bumper time for mobile bets according to Britain’s largest bookmaker William Hill. In mid 2012 the betting site announced that one in five of bets received had come through mobile devices, and as expected the rate of growth in mobile betting has sped ahead even further. William Hill announced this week that over £16 million worth of mobile bets were placed between December 22nd and January 1st.
During the festive and New Year period, it was Boxing Day that took the title of the busiest day, bringing in around £4 million worth of bets alone. That was in stark contrast to Christmas Day which accumulated less than half a million pounds worth of bets. But even that rate, it meant that William Hill were taking mobile bets at a rate of around one every second on December 25th.
Not too surprisingly, online betting site William Hill announced that football was the busiest markets for mobile betting, taking a 43% share of all bets. The busiest match for mobile betting at William Hill was the New Year’s Day clash between Southampton and Arsenal, which took in around £350,000 worth of bets. Horse racing produced a 37% share of all bets on January 1st as well.
The single biggest mobile bet that was placed at online betting site William Hill over the period was a massive £12,500 wager on Michael van Gerwen to beat Colin Lloyd at the PDC Dart World CHampionship (a bet which was won). The iPhone version of the William Hill app has received over 600,000 downloads in the space of a year.
