William Hill teams up with ARC for new free-to-air racing channel8th January 2020 / lee
Major online betting operator William Hill has secured a deal with Arena Racing company over it’s racing streams. William Hill, who have live racing streams supplied to their platforms by At The Races, have used that streaming data deal to broadcast to a new channel called “Betting TV”.
With Betting TV being a free-to-air channel it means unprecedented access. In the current system at William Hill, a minimum £1 stake on a race is needed to be able to gain access to the live stream of that race. But with the free channel becoming available to anyone, regardless of whether or not they are a customer with William Hill, really shakes that up.
There are media rights to over 1,000 races that Betting TV will be enjoying. It will be content from the 24 tracks that are managed by Arena Racing. That means some big races like the Midlands Grand National and the St Leger are going to be free-to-air on the new platform.
Betfred was the first to jump into this, breaking away from the industry consensus that it was going to be too costly of a move. But since Betfred joined, Boylesports, Betway, BetVictor, Unibet and now William Hill have followed suit.
The new model from ARC is a revenue-sharing deal, instead of a fixed-price per-stream that bookmakers are used to shelling out. Some operators are strongly opposed to that, citing that the overall costs of the deal with ARC are going hurt bookmakers more than the pay-per-stream model.
